- Optimising for visible busyness instead of outcomes. Automatable tasks are often the most visible ones — the report, the status update, the scheduled meeting. Judgment work is quieter and easier to overlook, including by the person doing it.

The concern is legitimate and worth taking seriously rather than brushing aside — entry-level roles have traditionally been built around exactly the structured, repetitive tasks that automate first, which is part of why several major workforce surveys have flagged reduced entry-level hiring as a near-term trend. The most effective response is proactively volunteering for ambiguous or judgment-heavy work earlier than past generations typically got access to it, rather than waiting years to "earn" that kind of assignment.
Quarterly is a sustainable default for most roles — frequent enough to catch meaningful shifts in a fast-moving field, infrequent enough that it doesn't become a chore you skip. If you work in a function where AI adoption is moving unusually fast — software engineering and customer support are two current examples — a monthly light-touch check may be worth the extra effort.
